Why does my computer freeze when I start the program?

Freezes on Splash Screen When launching PrintMaster® 12, the program freezes on the splash screen (or opening window). Attempting to install the program on a system that does not meet the system requirements, or corrupted files can cause this issue. The procedures presented in the remainder of this technical note will allow the program to launch as designed. Verify the following: Does the system meet the requirements of the program? Click or search for Minimum System Requirements (Technical Note ID: 27417) to view the system requirements of the program.

For Windows® 2000 and Windows® XP, you must be logged into Windows® as a user with administrator privileges to properly troubleshoot the issue. Press ESC Key to Launch the Program

When the program freezes at the splash screen, it is possible that an error has occurred. (Its message would remain hidden behind the splash screen.) To allow the program to launch, slowly press the ESC key twice. (The ESC key is typically found in the upper-left corner of the keyboard.)

NOTE: Although the above method can sometimes allow the program to launch, it will not resolve the issue. It is possible that the issue will reoccur the next time the program is launched. To resolve the issue, complete the procedure that follows.

Delete Damaged Settings Files

PrintMaster® 12 stores settings for saved projects and artwork in special files, which can sometimes become damaged. Removing these files and allowing the program to rebuild them will resolve this issue.

Choose from one of the following: To view instructions to complete this process for Windows® 2000 and Windows® XP, click or scroll to Deleting Settings Files (Windows® 2000/XP).

To view instructions for Windows® 95, Windows® 98 and Windows® Me, complete the procedure that follows. Deleting Settings Files (Windows® 95/98/Me)

Close all open windows and programs to return to the desktop.

Click Start, select Find (Windows® 95/98) or Search (Windows® Me), and click Files or Folders. The Search or Find window will open.

Type USERPROJ.*;USERART.* into the Named: field. (Verify that a semicolon is typed between USERPROJ.* and USERART.* and not a colon.)

Confirm that the Look In: field is set to My Computer.

Click the Find Now (Windows® 95/98) or Search Now (Windows® Me) button to begin the search.

NOTE: The search should find at least 16 files.

Once the search is complete, click the Edit menu and choose Select All.

Press and hold the CTRL key on the keyboard and select all files named USERPROJ.DEF and USERART.DEF.

Release the CTRL key. All files except the .DEF files should be selected.

Verify that the files with the .DEF extension are not selected. If a .DEF file is selected, repeat Steps 7 and 8 to deselect that .DEF file.

NOTE: Do not delete any file showing the .DEF file extension.

Once all files except the .DEF files are selected, tap the DELETE key on the keyboard.

Restart the computer.

Launch PrintMaster® 12 and click Yes when prompted to add any projects to the Your Own Project collection or any artwork to the Your Own Art collection.

Continue to use the program. NOTE: If the issue reoccurs, click or search for Manually Uninstalling PrintMaster® 12 (Technical Note ID: 30284) to view instructions to uninstall and reinstall the program.

Deleting Settings Files (Windows® 2000/XP)

Close all open windows and programs to return to the desktop.

Click Start and choose Run.

Type %HOMEPATH% into the Open: field and click OK.

Click Tools in the menu bar and choose Folder Options.

Click the View tab in the window that appears.

Locate the Hidden Files And Folders setting and ensure that Show Hidden Files And Folders is selected.

Click OK to accept the change.

Double-click the Local Settings folder.

Double-click the Application Data folder.

Double-click the Broderbund Software folder.

Double-click the Print folder.

Right-click the PrintMaster 12 folder and choose Delete from the menu that appears.

Click Yes if prompted to move any files to the Recycle Bin.

Launch PrintMaster® 12 and click Yes when prompted to add any projects to the Your Own Project collection or any artwork to the Your Own Art collection.

Continue to use the program. NOTE: If the issue reoccurs, click or search for Manually Uninstalling PrintMaster® 12 (Technical Note ID: 30284) to view instructions to uninstall and reinstall the program.
