Product support:

Will not run when clicking on icon

If Britannica Ready Reference does not start once you click on the icon, you may have a previous version of the Sun Java Runtime Environment installed or your previous version was not uninstalled properly.

You may need to delete certain keys from your registry. The Britannica program cannot overwrite a more recent version of the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) on your system. This makes it impossible for the Sun JRE 1.3.1 to be installed on your computer if you have a newer version of the JRE or if your version has been corrupted. However, deleting the registry keys related to the Sun JRE before installing the Britannica program seems to correct the matter. First, you will need to use Add\Remove Programs to remove the Sun JRE.

Windows 95, 98, or ME - To access Add\Remove Programs, please follow these steps:

1. Double-click My Computer on your Windows Desktop.

2. Double-click Control Panel.

3. Double-click Add\Remove Programs.

4. Select each Java program in the list and click the Add\Remove button. You can remove only one program at a time. Note: You may see a prompt regarding uninstalling shared files; click the Yes to All button. These files are safe to uninstall.

Windows 2000 or XP - To access Add\Remove Programs, please follow these steps:

1. Click on Start > Control Panel.

2. Double-click Add\Remove Programs.

3. Click Change or Remove Programs in the left-hand side of the window.

4. Scroll to the Java program and click on it. You will need to remove every version Java that is listed.

5. Click the Remove button to its right.

6. Once you have responded to the confirmation message, the program will be uninstalled.

Note: You may see a prompt regarding uninstalling shared files; click the Yes to All button. These files are safe to uninstall.

Once you have uninstalled the JRE, please follow these instructions:

1. Click Start > Run.

2. Type in the following command: regedit

3. Click OK. This launches the 'Registry Editor' program.

4. Open HKEY_CURRENT_USER by clicking on the plus sign to its left. Open Software. Click on JavaSoft and push the Delete key on the keyboard. (Note: If you do not see JavaSoft listed in this location, please proceed to the next step.) When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click YES. Scroll all the way to the top. Close HKEY_CURRENT_USER by clicking on the minus sign to its left.

5. Open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. Open Software. Click on JavaSoft and push the Delete key on the keyboard. (Note: If you do not see JavaSoft listed in this location, please proceed to the next step.) When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click YES. Close the Registry Editor program.

6. Proceed to the following link to download the JRE:

http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/download.html Note: Save the JRE program to your Desktop. When the program has been completely downloaded and saved to your Desktop, please double-click on it to perform the JRE installation.
